Reply with quote | #2 | Answer: The project in its current state (plans, permits, site acquistition, demolition and foundation) is the culmination of over a hundred million dollars of developer monies and four years of negotiations. John Upton and myself negotiated an agreement that involved no financial risk to the city for the project as it now sits, and would not require a transit occupancy tax (TOT) bond to pay debt service on the City's portion (the convention center) when construction begins. The project will be financed by property taxes (both tax increment and mello roos taxes). I am confident that work on the project will commence within the next six months, and that it would be nearly impossible for anything other than the approved project be built as it would require new permitting and TRPA amendments, at the least. My charge, if elected, would be to make sure that the agreements I help secure are enforced. Particularly that the convention center itself be of sufficient size and quality to attract off season visitors and that public access for local events be memorialized. I still believe a convention center will go along way to help our local economy. |
